Recently, I have been spending time studying and observing people who seemingly operate in “greatness”. I say seemingly because I have a biased perspective of what makes a person “great”. My perspective is limited to my definition of “greatness”. However, the Bible clearly defines God’s greatness, and that same greatness is in us…all of us as God’s creation. God’s definition of greatness as outlined in the Bible should be our measuring stick not our own definition. For instance, the Bible declares in Deuteronomy 28:12-13 (NIV), “The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land and in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) states, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV) states, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” Romans 8:37 (NIV) states, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
Another one of my favorite passages in the Bible that gives reference to God’s greatness is the Prayer of Jabez. While reading this prayer I envision Jabez stretching out his arms as wide as they can go to symbolize his territory being enlarged by God. I also envision Jabez’s outstretched arms as a symbolization of God’s greatness being expanded on the earth through one man. When we enlarge our territory we are essentially asking God to expand our greatness in Him to all the ends of the earth. Let’s take a look at the scripture. Try stretching out your arms as you read this passage to experience a sense of God’s greatness being enlarged in you. 1 Chronicles 4:10 (NIV) states:
“Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.”
Jabez’s prayer is also significant because in verse 9 the Bible indicates that Jabez’s mother named him Jabez meaning “I gave birth to him in pain.” In the very next verse Jabez lifts up this powerful prayer to God. Jabez’s name did not indicate anything great about him per se. However, through the power of prayer, Jabez made a request of God to add His power to his pain and use him for His greatness.
Becoming great requires us to be PREPARED for greatness, POSITIONED for greatness, and POSTURED for greatness. Jabez prepared himself for greatness by asking God for protection from harm and pain. He was preparing his spirit for disappointments, fear, and unavoidable evil. He positioned himself for greatness by asking God to take His rightful position over all the works of his hands. Finally, Jabez was postured for greatness by willingly approaching God in a posture of prayer.
Greatness is in us. As believers, it is up to us to tap into what we already possess. God granted us with a gift…His Greatness!
